COLOMBIAN STAR IBARGUEN CONCLUDES DIAMOND DOUBLE IN BRUSSELS

Image
Caterine Ibarguen’s unlikely double diamond ambitions reached fruition at the 42nd Van Damme Memorial in Brussels on Friday (31) as the Colombian star added the  IAAF Diamond League  title in the long jump to the triple jump title she took in Zurich just over 24 hours earlier. Last night, Ibarguen won the triple jump by just one centimetre but tonight, in her second event, the margin was considerably more comfortable, her 6.80m fourth-round leap beating Briton Shara Proctor's 6.70m best from round five to win by 10 centimetres.  "It wasn't easy but I was very well prepared for both events this season, and especially this weekend," said Ibarguen, who’ll take home two Diamond Trophies and a cool US$100,000 after her brief visit to northcentral Europe. Doubles have rarely been attempted in IAAF Diamond League finals and few have succeeded prior to Ibarguen’s this year. Before the change to a championship style format last year, Allyson Felix, Carmelita Jeter and S...

Qatar’s team included 400m hurdles champion Abderrahman Samba, who got his team off to a good start with a 44.5 lead-off leg. Mohamed Nasir Abbas and Mohamed El-Nour maintained the team’s lead before individual 400m champion Abdalelah Haroun anchored the team to victory in 3:00.56. The quartet not only obliterated the Qatari record of 3:02.50 set in 2015, but they also took 0.2 off the Asian record of 3:00.76 set by Japan at the 1996 Olympic Games. India clocked 3:01.85 to secure the silver medal from Japan, who recorded 3:01.94. The pre-race favourites for the women’s title, Bahrain, suffered from a poor first exchange and could not quite get back on terms with India. The team of Hima Das, Poovamma Machettira, Saritaben Gayakwad and Vismaya Velluva won in 3:28.72, contributing to India’s fifth successive victory in the women’s 4x400m at the Asian Games. Bahrain, with a team that included world silver medallist Salwa Eid Naser, settled for silver in 3:30.16, while Vietnam to...

ASHER-SMITH CEMENT STATUS AS STARS OF EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Image
Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith had already secured the 100m and 200m titles, clocking world-leading times of 10.85 and 21.89 to break her own national records. Fittingly, she was given the responsibility of anchoring the British 4x100m team – assuming the baton would make it to the 22-year-old. Thankfully it did, but she had some work to do as the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland were slightly ahead going into the final exchange. Asher-Smith, as she had done all week, kept her cool and moved into the lead half way down the home straight before going on to win by a three-metre margin in 41.88. It was her third gold medal and world-leading mark of the championships and she became just the third woman in history to win the 100m, 200m and 4x100m sprint triple at the European Championships. “I’m so happy, it has been a crazy championships,” said Asher-Smith. “I know this isn’t the Olympic Games or World Championships, but I’m still very proud. I still have a lot left to give.

Asaba 2018: Media LOC Clarifies Sensational Report About Stephen Keshi Stadium

The Media department of the Asaba 2018 LOC has noted the report on some news platform about a falling fence near the swimming pool area at the Stephen Keshi Stadium and described the report as sensational. In a statement issued by Olukayode Thomas, the Head of Media and Publicity for the CAA Asaba 2018, he faulted the way the incidence was reported to give a wrong perception of what actually happened. “It is unfortunate to see journalists deliberately chose not to be professional in their work. The area in question is far away from the stadium where the championship is taking place. It is also still under construction; hence no one has passed it fit for use. None of this was put in context but the reporter only chose to take the shine off the good work the Delta state government is doing and the excitement the African athletes are having in Asaba since the championship kicked off  on Wednesday . Thomas also explained that the affected cars were all outside the stadium contra...
