ASHER-SMITH CEMENT STATUS AS STARS OF EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith had already secured the 100m and 200m titles, clocking world-leading times of 10.85 and 21.89 to break her own national records. Fittingly, she was given the responsibility of anchoring the British 4x100m team – assuming the baton would make it to the 22-year-old.
Thankfully it did, but she had some work to do as the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland were slightly ahead going into the final exchange. Asher-Smith, as she had done all week, kept her cool and moved into the lead half way down the home straight before going on to win by a three-metre margin in 41.88.
It was her third gold medal and world-leading mark of the championships and she became just the third woman in history to win the 100m, 200m and 4x100m sprint triple at the European Championships.
“I’m so happy, it has been a crazy championships,” said Asher-Smith. “I know this isn’t the Olympic Games or World Championships, but I’m still very proud. I still have a lot left to give.
