History makers Belgium female basketball team celebrate first success in style FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018.
TENERIFE (FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018) - Belgium has written a line in the history books after racking up their first-ever win at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018.
The Belgians, making their first appearance in the competition, not only got off the mark but did so in style after smashing fellow debutantes Puerto Rico 86-36, as the Central American side endured a nightmare opening -half. They recorded just six points, which set an unwanted record for fewest points in a half in the modern era.
As for Belgium, they enjoyed coasting to their first success, with Kyara Linskens taking the honour of scoring her country's opening basket in the tournament.
"I don't know if scoring our first basket really means a whole lot, but it was just important that we had a good start as a team - both in the game itself and also the tournament," said the centre, as Belgium handed out a dazzling 29 assists in the contest.
"Our defense was not as good in the second half - even though we went into half-time and the Coach told us to try and keep our focus.
